Erik Blandford,
It is always sad to discover that the hard drive on your Mac is running out of free space. All of a sudden the machine’s hard drive signals about space shortage. But certainly, you need not consider buying a new one since you can easily solve the problem by sweeping off the junk stuff from the hard drive. And there is more than one method to do so. We offer you a guidance how to clear the hard drive space using either the manual technique or a specialized commercial cleaner app.
Cleaning the junk manually
Jan 21, 2019 Newer MacBooks don’t have a traditional hard disk drive. Instead, they have a solid state drive or SSD. Now, the process for wiping your solid state drive is the same as erasing a hard drive. So, if you want to clean it, go ahead and follow the steps outlined in the section above. While the Mac OS X is traditionally viewed as being simpler and less complex than the Windows alternative, the hard drive in your Mac computer can still become slow if bogged down by too many files and folders. You can clean up a Mac OS X hard drive and delete extraneous files to free up space and help your Mac run faster.
The least costly way is, as usual, the manual way. It is preferable if you have time and a strong will to immerse into the depth of your hard drive to search for items to delete. But if the junk on your computer is of varied nature and requires a thorough removal procedure, then maybe using a commercial cleaner app would be better. But let us first consider all important points on the manual removal.
Unneeded files and folders
It will probably make the work easier if you begin with classifying the stuff that may be found unnecessary and so should be removed.
Such a classification gives the following categories:
All the above files are not so difficult to delete off your drive. Alternatively, you can move some of them to an external storage device like the external hard drive.
But removing installed apps often requires a different approach. Sometimes, it is sufficient just to delete the application folder and that’s all. There are no leftovers anywhere on your hard drive and the free space has increased. But quite often applications (like for example Microsoft Office and Photoshop) install their files (associated files) in different folders so you have to search for them. For that purpose, you may use Search text box in the Finder window. To avoid the procedure, in such cases, useful info can be found in readme files or other documentation. Check them and probably you will find out how to uninstall the whole application safely and quickly.
Another assistant for deleting apps bought from App Store is a Launchpad. From its display, you can click and hold down the icon until it wiggles, then clicks the X to delete the application.
Certainly, if you still need files in the old application’s folder, don’t forget to move them elsewhere before you delete the folder.
Also, don’t forget that deleted files are actually removed from the hard drive only when the Trash is emptied (and certainly the hard drive space will not be reclaimed until that moment). In this context, it is a good advice not to hurry up with deleting your files permanently by emptying the Trash. It is wiser to wait sometime. And if you realize that you deleted a file that you need, you can just restore it from the Trash.
How to clean Mac book using a commercial app
In order to avoid some of the above-mentioned time-consuming and not always safe procedures, you can choose to clean hard drive space on your Mac with a specially designed cleaned program.
For example, you can use a MacFly Pro. How to clean Mac book with this app?
The MacFly Pro has three modules: Smart Assistant, CleanUp and Tools. Each of them plays a role in the procedure of clearing the hard drive on a Mac computer. All the three modules can perform background scanning but, otherwise, each module focuses on its own preferable jobs.
Smart Assistant’s features include monitoring the system’s general state. When necessary, it produces notifications on possible improvements so that the user can either instantly apply or postpone (and schedule) them. The improvements may include removals of cookies and other files that Smart Assistant considers as junk.

The Cleanup module has a customizable scan that may be set to different sorts of possible junk like temporary files or caches. The module has an intuitive navigation and easy interface, which simplifies the procedure of removal.
Module Tools is responsible for especially deep scanning to find, apart from obvious junk stuff, also dubious files that seem to be unnecessary. Removal of such files is a subject to the user’s decision. Besides, this module perfectly uninstalls unnecessary applications leaving no leftover files on the hard drive.
